Louis Tibbetts, Public Service & Business

Graduating from Nute in 1921, Louis was active in the business community, owning and operating Tibbetts Store in Union for over 30 years.  A former selectman in Milton, Louis was the Chairman of The Grange, Pomona, and the Mason’s.  He formed the Sportsman Club in Union, and made possible baseball teams and Little League.  Louis hand wrote a History of Union, which has been published and can be found in the State Library and the NH Society of Historical Artifacts.

 

Arlene Laskey Tibbetts, Public Service & Business

Graduating from Nute in 1934, Arlene’s accomplishments included active involvement in a variety of church and community activities, music and education.  She was Sunday School Superintendent, Women’s Fellowship President, Choir Director and Organist, Bell Choir Director and church Clerk.  Arlene was President of Union Women’s Club and Wakefield Club, and organist for Easter Star for 30 years.  Arlene started up and supported 4-H; she opened and taught Tibbett’s Treasures Nursery School for thirteen years.  She was substitute teacher and music instructor at the Wakefield Schools.  Arlene served as Trustee for the Union Library, as well as librarian and gave book reviews at area book clubs.  She belonged to the VFW and Grange, but Arlene says she had the most fun singing in the Carroll Trio. 

 

Isabelle Hoyt Eldridge, Public Service

Graduating from Nute in 1936, Isabelle credits teacher Marjorie Goodwin for inspiring her to seek a career in Business Administration, and received her degree from Concord College of Business.  She worked as a private secretary and then became Milton Town Clerk and Milton School District Clerk from 1964 to 1987.Isabelle worked as substitute in the business department and in the office at Nute.  For many years, she was also Justice of the Peace and Notary Public.  Isabelle has fond memories of Nute, the various sports, musical concerts, and Founder’s Day Prize Speaking Contest. 

 

 

Charles Logan, Public Service

Charles “Charlie” Logan graduated from Nute in 1940.  In February of 1943  Charlie joined the Army and spent three years in Italy until the end of World War II.  In October of 1943 he married Patricia Parsons and they had five children, all graduates of Nute High School.  Charlie served the community of Milton all his life in many important capacities.  He was very active in the American Legion, VFW, Knight of Columbus, and the Boy Scouts.  While a leader in the Republican Party and Milton Selectman, Charlie was awarded the designation of Outstanding Citizen by President Reagan.  Charlie worked many years for General Electric yet managed to spend his spare time as the town barber.  He liked to boast that he had cut the hair of four generations of Paeys.  He enjoyed being Master of Ceremonies at Milton Variety shows and always kept his audiences laughing.   Charlie passed away on Christmas Day 1997.

 

Geraldine Philpot Sylvester, Public Service

Geraldine graduated from Nute class of 1948.  She was elected to Dover City Council in 1970.  She served seven consecutive terms and was named Mayor of Dover in 1974 & 1975.  Governor John Sununu appointed Geraldine Director of the Office of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention in 1983, continuing in that capacity under Governors Gregg and Merrill.  In January of 1996 she served as Director of Public Health for New Hampshire.  Her service on state, local, and federal levels includes: National Advisory Committee on Alcohol, Drug Abuse and Mental Health Problems, Vice President, National Conference of Republican Mayors and Municipal Officials, President Dover Chapter Business and Professional Women, Chair, NH Small Business Advisory Council, Member, Board of Directors, Strafford County Homemakers Home Health Aide Association. 

 

Sheldon “Skip” Damon, Education

“Skip” graduated from Nute class of 1967 ,Plymouth State College 197. And he received his Master’s Degree from UNH.  He began his career as physical education teacher in Rochester and Groveton.  Skip was Principal of Milton Elementary for four years, and Nute High School for five years.  After serving as Asst. Superintendent in SAU #61, Skip returned to Milton to be Assistant Superintendent for SAU #64 in 1989 and served as Superintendent until 1997.  A trustee for the Nute Library in Milton, Skip also coached boys and girls basketball at Nute.  Nominated for the first Wall of Distinction, Skip passed away in August 2002.

  

Brian Moore, Music

Brian graduated from Nute, class of 1973.  In 1977, he earned his BA in Music Education from UNH and in 1982, a Master’s in Music Education from the University of Wisconsin.  Brian taught middle and high school music, conducted the local orchestra and was the computer coordinator for the Verona Wisconsin School District.  He received his PHD in music Education in 1986 from the University of Wisconsin.  In 1986 Brian was employed as Associate Professor of Music Education at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.  In 1989 Brian became a research and technology consultant for Yamaha Corporation.  In 2000 Brian was named overseer of all the software development for the “Music in Education” program with Yamaha.

 

Cheryl Chase Peabody, Education

Cheryl graduated from Nute, class of 1981.  She was an outstanding athlete and she played AAU Basketball.  Cheryl attended and played basketball at Plymouth College from 1981-1985.  She began her teaching/coaching at Farmington Elementary School.  In 1991 Cheryl became Assistant Coach of the  girls basketball tea at UNH.  Cheryl served as Assistant Principal of Farmington Jr. High from 1997-2001.  In 2001 she became Vice Principal of the Barrington Elementary School.  In 2002 Cheryl earned her Master’s Degree.

 

Julie Donlon Hatch, Athletics

After graduating from Nute High School, class of 1987, Julie continued her education at UNH on a basketball scholarship.  Following college, Julie coached varsity girls basketball at Spaulding High in Rochester for five years, while substitute teaching at both Spaulding and Nute.  While at UNH Julie began a new direction in her athletic career as a golf professional, becoming a PGA apprentice.  In April of 2000 Julie earned her class “A” status becoming a head PGA Golf Professional.  In 2002Julie became the head Golf Pro at the Abenaqui Country Club and owner of the Golf Shop. 

 

David Burrows, Athletics & Business

David graduated from Nute, class of 1990 where he distinguished himself on the Nute basketball team as: NH all-time leading scorer (2845 points”; NH Mr. Basketball award: NH Alhambra selection: Manchester Union Leader Athlete of the Month; 4-time Foster’s Daily Democrat Dream Team selection: 1990 McDonald’s All-American nominee; US Army Scholar Athlete Award; NHIAA Tournament Scoring Record Class “S”.  David attended Bryant College on a full athletic four-year scholarship, graduating in 1994 with a BS in Finance.  He was named Bryat College Athlete of the Year in 1994.  David is the founder/co-owner of East West Trading Corporation, which he started in 1998.  David was awarded 2002 Bryant College “Who’s Who Among Business Executives.  David is married to Lisa Dube, Nute class of 1990

Lewis W. Nute , Public Service,

Honorary Member

Lewis Nute was born in 1820 and grew up in West Milton.  Though his schooling was limited to six weeks each winter, he gained enough education to enable him to teach school for two terms  In 1840 Lewis moved to Boston and worked as a clerk in the shoe and boot business of Elmer Townsend.  In 1853 he became part owner of the firm Potter, Elder & Nute.  In 1863 Lewis Nute purchased the entire business which was known as the largest brogan and plow shoe business in Massachusetts, producing 4000 pairs per day.  Upon his death in 1888, Lewis W. Nute willed $125,000 to build and support a public high school.  He also provided $10,000 for the construction of Nute Chapel and a trust of $30,000 for its care.  Lewis Nute cared for the welfare of the children of Milton.  He wanted them to have a fair chance in life and knew it would be possible with a proper education.  Lewis W. Nute’s generosity continues to benefit Milton residents with the construction of the new Nute Library that opened in 2000.

 

Marjorie E. Goodwin, Education & Public Service,

Honorary Member

 

Miss Marjorie Goodwin attended school in West Lebanon, Maine.  She graduated from Sullivan High School, Berwick Maine, and Nasson College in Springvale Maine.  She later earned her BS and M. Ed. Degrees from UNH.  Miss Goodwin taught business courses at Nute from 1925 until her retirement in 1971.  On two occasions she served as acting principal and was assistant principal at Nute from 1960 until her retirement.  Miss Goodwin was very active in local school and area organizations.
