1961                Douglas Anthony Greene

Douglas Anthony Greene lived in Milton Mills.  After graduating from Nute High School in 1961, “Tony” Greene enlisted in the U.S. Navy.  He spent two years on an Air Craft Carrier; and the next two years he was in Key West, Florida where he took out Navy men on a fishing boat for recreation.  This gave him extra time, so he bought a coffee house where he played guitar with a group.  After his discharge from the Navy, he returned to Milton Mills, where he worked with his father in the Greene Tannery.  The tannery employed 75 men and women providing gainful employment in the greater Milton area.  After 5 years at Greene Tannery, he moved to Long Key Florida, bought a marina and stayed there for a year and a half.  Tony returned to work at Greene Tannery.  During that time, he worked very hard trying to save it; but with the high cost of fuel, a poor business climate and the EPA’s strict restrictions, the family finally had to close the factory in 1977.  Tony then lived in Taunton Mass with his wife, former Nute graduate Lynne Griffith Greene, where they raised their son and three daughters.  He continued to work in the leather business and worked for three different businesses.  He then opened the Phoenix Tanning and Leather in Boston, which remained open for 25 years.  It was difficult to work in the business with 65 costumers and 38 employees, however, it was a very successful business until he suffered a severe stroke.  Tony now lives in Costa Rica with his wife and many new good friends.  The Nute High School Wall of Distinction Committee is pleased to recognize Douglas Anthony Greene for his contributions in the field of Business.

Another valuable contact Chaplain Ducharme, began spreading the word, and the Soldiers Helpers began to receive names of soldiers and other chaplains who needed letters and items.  The dozen helpers, have turned into 200 plus volunteers, who are able to send several large mailings each year to soldiers and veterans in homeless shelters, nursing homes and military hospitals.  In January 2011, Chris and Alice were honored by the Celtics as a recipient of the Heroes Among Us award.   Alice and Chris emphasized that the award really belongs to all who continue to help and send items.  The Nute Wall of Distinction Committee is pleased to honor Alice Henner Greenleaf and Milton Christopher Greenleaf for their contributions to the US Military through our greater community, in the field of Community Service.
