Biographies for 2006

Harold Pinkham,  Public Service 

Born in his father’s house on Silver Street, Harold Pinkham attended Milton schools, graduating from Nute in 1911.  Following a year at Dartmouth and one at Bowdoin College, he decided to travel.  He spent several years touring the United States.  Harold served as Postmaster for 22 years before retiring in 1964.  His great-grandfather, the first settled minister, built the Town Pound on Plummer’s Ridge, opposite the Town House.  Harold wrote news columns for many years, on many subjects and was well known for his poetry, especially his “Poem of Milton”, written in 1952.

 

C. Leroy Dickson, Education

Charles Leroy Dickson grew up in Milton and graduated from Nute in 1922 and was college educated.  He became superintendent of Spaulding Fibre at the South Milton plant, following in his father’s footsteps, where he remained until the mid 70’s.  Always known as “Roy”, he took an active part in town affairs.  He was a School Board member for several years and was on the building committee for Nute’s first addition in 1960.  Roy was very active in the Community Church serving in many capacities, and was well known by everyone.

 

John Gilman, Public Service  

John graduated from Nute high School in 1953.  He worked for the Milton Highway Department from 1954 – 1957, and then served in the US Army Corp of Engineers, and Army reserve until 1963.  He worked for Eastern State Farmer’s (Agway) for 37 years.  John was very active in town affairs as a member of the Board of Selectmen 1986 – 1991; Milton Fire Department Chief 1976-1996; NH State Forest Fire Warden for 30+ years; Ambulance Director;  Zoning Board of Adjustment; President of Nute Charitable Association.  After retiring from Agway, John drove bus for Milton Schools, traveling the West Milton Route for eleven years.

 

Caroline Plummer Butler, Education

Caroling grew up in Milton, graduating from Nute High School, Class of 1965.  Following graduation, She attended Plymouth State College earning a B.Ed in Elementary Education and an M.Ed in Early Childhood Education.  Caroline worked at Keene State College in the laboratory school, taught third grade in Washington DC area, and taught at SUNY Plattsburgh in the educational demonstration school.  Caroline returned to Milton in 1979, and began teaching in Farmington where she spent ten years at the elementary school moving from teacher, to assistant principal to principal.  For the past several years Caroline has been Principal at the Maple Wood Elementary School in Somersworth.  Caroline has been very active at the state and national level for the Parent Teachers Association (PTA).  Serving on the National Board,  she was selected to represent the National PTA at the White House on three occasions.  Caroline remains active in community activities, serving as a member of the Nute High School & Library trustees.

 

Timothy Merrill, Public Service

Tim graduated from Nute High School class of 1970.  He began his career in 1982 as a part time police officer for the towns of Middleton, Milton, New Durham and Wakefield.  In 1984 he became a full time police officer with the town of Wakefield.  He graduated from the New Hampshire Police Academy in 1985 and the FBI National Academy, Quantico Virginia in 2001.  Promoted to Chief of Police in Wakefield he also served  as the Juvenile Office, and investigator and as he District Court Prosecutor.  Currently Time remains Chief of Police for the towns of Wakefield, Brookfield, and the Emergency Management Director of Wakefield.  Time has been a volunteer Hunter Education Instructor for the NH Fish and Game Department for 17 years.

 

Andrew Lucier, Public Service

Andy grew up in Milton and graduated from Nute High School with the class of 1977.  He attended NH Technical School in Laconia taking courses in fire fighting.  He joined the Milton Fire Department in 1977, becoming Deputy Chief and moving on to Fire Chief in 1996.  Since he became Chief there has been a never ending rash of accidents which he always handled with a cool head.  In May of 2006, when the rain swollen Salmon Falls River was threatening Rochester, Dover and Somersworth, Andy made the difficult decision to hold back the river at the dam at Milton Three Ponds, and chose the protection of people over that of property.  For his level headed decision, Andy has been applauded by the New Hampshire Governor and the Legislature.

 

 

Col. Eric J. McKinley, Military Service – 1980

Eric Mckinley lived in Milton Mills and graduated from Nute with the class of 1980.  He received a B.S., Atmospheric Sciences from Plymouth State College in 1984, and was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1984 from the Reserve Officer Training Corps.   He earned his Master’s Degree in Meteorology leading an international research team flying into typhoons to validate forecast theories still in use today.  Eric has served all over the United States, in the United Kingdom, and in Portugal.  From June 2003 – June 2005 Eric was commander of the Air force Combat Climatology Center in Ashville, NC.  Presently he serves as Deputy Commander, 422d Air Base Group, RAF Croughton, UK.  Erik was promoted to Full Colonel on April 28, 2006.

 

Honorary Recipient

Emma Ramsey, Public Service

Born October 29, 1905 in Milton, Emma married Emile Vachon, but was widowed at age 26 when Emile died in a fire, leaving her to raise five children between the ages of three months and six years old.  She also raised tow other children who were left on her doorstep.  Her family is spread across the country from Milton toe Michigan to Florida.  Her connections to the School District are many.  She was one of the first people to server hot lunches to the Elementary School.  She was a School Board member from 1951 - 1959 and served on the Building Committee.  Emma was recognized in 1974 for her devoted service to the Milton School District.  Her accomplishments include: a devoted member of the Sacred heart Church; 1950 NH Mother of the Year;  1995 Milton Citizen of the Year; Milton Tax Collector; Storekeeper and meat cutter; delivered meals for Community Action; and very involved with the American Legion Auxilliary.
